Swansea City sit top of the Championship 10 games into the season, completing a major turnaround nearly one year after head coach Vitor Matos took over a side troubled by relegation worries.
The 38-year-old Portuguese manager arrived at the Welsh club in November 2025 to replace Alan Sheehan. Prior to the appointment, Matos had overseen just 12 senior matches as manager of Portuguese second-tier club Maritimo, though his broader coaching career spans 23 years across multiple continents and roles.
A central element of Swansea's resurgence has been high-intensity pressing, an approach honed during his five-year stint working as an elite development coach under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. Matos later served as assistant to Pep Lijnders at Red Bull Salzburg before taking his first senior managerial role.
"Liverpool influenced me a lot in terms of counter-pressing, pressing, intensity, and what makes you grow as a team," Matos said. "The most important thing is how much you believe in your idea and this style is how I see football. That's why I wanted this to be the foundation for our team."
Upon his arrival at Swansea, Matos prioritised restoring squad confidence and establishing tactical consistency. He shifted away from previous alternations between four- and five-man defences to install a permanent back four within an aggressive 4-3-3 formation.
Swansea's system also integrates principles of positional play developed during his time with FC Porto's youth setup, alongside ball-overload concepts adapted from his coaching spell at Shandong Taishan in China. The framework relies heavily on dynamic full-backs to unbalance opposition structures, whether facing zonal schemes or man-to-man marking.
Beyond tactical adjustments, Matos credited Klopp's leadership style for shaping how he manages individual players. "The time with Jurgen was massive regarding that. How he was as a leader, how he took care of the club, how he took care of the players - that moulded a lot of me," Matos said.
