From World Champion to Mentor: Jean Flores Bridges Generations for Venezuela at U-23 Softball World Cup

From Rookie to Role Model: Jean Flores Bridges Generations for Venezuela at U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup

In just months, Jean Flores has gone from the youngest player on Venezuela’s historic Men’s Softball World Cup-winning squad to the lone senior world champion guiding a new generation at the WBSC U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup. In 2025, Flores was part of the Venezuelan team that stunned New Zealand 3–0 to claim the country’s first-ever WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup title. A backup player learning from the bench, he made every chance count. “I was the youngest, in a backup role,” Flores recalled. “But every time I got the chance, I gave my best. ”That mindset helped fuel Venezuela’s title run — starting with a gritty 1–0 win over Argentina and ending with him on the field, glove ready, as the final out was recorded. “Defending when we won the title, that’s something I’ll never forget,” he said. The homecoming was unforgettable. “The fans received us in an incredible way. It was three days full of emotion,” Flores said. Now, at the U-23 World Cup in Sincelejo, he carries that championship culture into a young Venezuelan roster chasing its own glory. Leading by example, not pressure
Flores, now the only senior world champion on the team, dismisses talk of added pressure. “I don’t feel extra pressure. I just try to bring the good things from that team. We were a family, always united, and that’s what I want here. ”His message to the squad is simple: “That we are a family. That we enjoy the game. That’s the key.” For Flores, leadership means modeling preparation, attitude, and consistency — not speeches .Venezuela’s goal is clear: climb to the top of the world rankings. But the approach stays grounded. “We go step by step, game by game, giving everything we have. ”Late start, fast rise
Unlike many elite softball players, Flores didn’t grow up in the sport. Like most Venezuelans, he started in baseball before switching to softball at 18. “The adaptation is similar,” he explained. “You adjust at the plate, and with work, things come. ”As Venezuela battles in Sincelejo, Flores carries more than personal ambition. He carries the culture of a world champion team — and the responsibility to pass it on. “We have to do the little things right,” he said. “That’s how you win.”
