Tensions Simmer as Iran Acknowledges Pakistani Mediation Amid Trump’s Ceasefire Extension
— Iran has expressed formal gratitude for Pakistan’s role as the “sole mediator” in the ongoing conflict with the United States, though it remains pointedly silent on the specifics of a ceasefire extension recently announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei lauded Islamabad’s “gracious efforts” to end the hostilities that have gripped the region since late February. However, while acknowledging Pakistan’s diplomatic push, Baqaei pivoted quickly to Iran’s military readiness, stating that Tehran is taking all “necessary measures” to safeguard its national security against “military aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime.”
Trump Cites Pakistan’s Request for Truce
The diplomatic movement follows a late-night announcement from President Donald Trump via Truth Social. Trump confirmed he would extend the ceasefire—which was set to expire Wednesday—following direct requests from Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.
In typical blunt fashion, Trump characterized the Iranian government as “seriously fractured” and stated he had directed the U.S. military to maintain its maritime blockade while waiting for a “unified proposal” from Tehran.
“We have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal,” Trump posted, adding that the military remains “ready and able” should talks fail.
The Islamabad Impasse: Blockades and Bottlenecks
Despite the extension, the path to a second round of talks in Islamabad remains clouded by heavy friction. Iranian leaders have labeled the continued U.S. maritime blockade a “flagrant breach” of the ceasefire’s spirit.
Key sticking points preventing a breakthrough include:
-
The Maritime Blockade: Tehran views the interdiction of its vessels as “negotiation under coercion.”
-
Strait of Hormuz: Iran Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that reopening the vital waterway is “impossible” while the blockade persists.
-
Nuclear Constraints: Washington is reportedly demanding long-term guarantees regarding Iran’s uranium enrichment and weaponization safeguards.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian took to X (formerly Twitter) to echo these frustrations, calling the U.S. stance “hypocritical rhetoric” and citing the blockade as the primary obstacle to “genuine negotiations.”
