Japan defeat Australia in final to lift U-23 Men’s Softball World Championship
Victory in Sincelejo ends Australia’s hold on title after narrow 2023 win

Japan has been crowned the new U-23 Men’s Softball World Champions after a clinical 4-2 victory over defending champions Australia. In a high-stakes rematch of the 2023 final, Japan’s pitcher Rio Takahashi delivered a masterclass performance, tossing a complete game with eight strikeouts to earn MVP honors.

The Japanese offense struck early at the 20 de Enero stadium, capitalizing on Australian errors and aggressive base running to build a 4-0 lead by the fifth inning. While Australia managed a late-game rally sparked by an Oliver Stewart solo home run, Takahashi remained composed to secure Japan’s first-ever world title in the U-23 category.

  • The Early Strike: Japan’s offense wasted no time, jumping to a 2–0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI triple from Rikuto Yamamoto and a sacrifice fly by Koki Yagi.

  • Insurance Runs: In the fifth, Japan extended their lead to 4–0 following a double by Masaya Usuki and a clutch single by Yagi.

  • The Aussie Fightback: Australia mounted a late threat in the seventh inning with a solo home run by Oliver Stewart, but the rally fell short as Japan’s defense held firm.

Right-handed pitcher Rio Takahashi was the hero of the night, earning MVP honors after pitching a complete game. Takahashi allowed only four hits while striking out eight Australian batters to clinch the gold medal.

This victory is a monumental “revenge” win for Japan, who lost 1–0 to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final. While Japan has previously won four U-18 world titles, this is their first-ever championship at the U-23 or senior levels, signaling a shifting of the guard in men’s softball.
